An Israeli parliamentary committee to debate on Monday (26/12) to recognize the genocide in Armenia, this step will likely be more heat the already strained relations with Turkey.
Education committee began to discuss proposals for the mark, April 24, the day when the Turkish massacre of Armenians starting in 1915, as a day of remembrance for the "massacre of the Armenians."
A similar proposal was rejected by parliament in 2007, when relations between Israel and Turkey are well established.
But relations plunged into deep crisis last year when Israeli forces killed nine Turks in an attack on the Turkish Mavi Marmara, part of a flotilla of activists who tried to break through Israel's naval blockade on Gaza.
"We have been working on this for years," said Georgette Avakian Armenian National Committee in Jerusalem, told Israeli public radio. "I hope the time has come."
A supporter of Armenian genocide commemoration of the Israeli parliament - Zahava Gal-On of the left-wing Meretz party - said that climate change will probably give diplomatic support current profits.
"For years, the Israeli government has refused to recognize the genocide for cynical reasons, strategic and economic, related to a close relationship with Turkey," he told the daily Haaretz.
"Now, given the state of relations between the two countries is heating up, I can not rule out the possibility that the foreign ministry should be able to exploit this issue."
